When Aunty Kehau came to visit us up at Kāpalama she was able to give us the background history of Mokauea. It meant a lot to me personally, because I only knew little knowledge about the island. Mokauea is very scared ground, it is where kupuna and aliʻi are buried. We learned about the different waʻa’s and how they were made and how the workers at Mokauea try to keep and protect them. We went over the different types of mauna and wai on the island and how they function and provide for our facilities. The most outstanding thing that we learned about was the part when we talked about the ʻOahu fishponds. ʻOahu had over 100 fishponds, now it has dropped to less than 20. This just proves what we need to do as Hawaiians to bring back and keep our culture. I found learning about Mokauea, it is much much more than just a island. There is so much scared history behind the all of it.
